Shinde likely to be suspended

Police Inspector Sanjay Shinde,a close relative of Vijay Palande — the main accused arrested for the Arun Tikku and Karan Kakad murder cases — is likely to be suspended next week for his alleged role in helping the accused, sources in Mumbai Police said on Friday.

Police Inspector Sanjay Shinde,a close relative of Vijay Palande — the main accused arrested for the Arun Tikku and Karan Kakad murder cases — is likely to be suspended next week for his alleged role in helping the accused, sources in Mumbai Police said on Friday.

After Palande had escaped from police custody on April 10 — he was later arrested — Shinde was transferred to the less important administrative department of the Crime Branch. Shinde’s brother is married to Palande’s elder sister.

A departmental inquiry is being conducted by ACP Arvind Mahabadi to investigate whether Shinde had helped Palande escape, and whether he aided Palande in any other way at any stage.

“The report from ACP Mahabadi is likely to be submitted in a couple of days, and necessary action will be taken on the basis of the findings. If it all there is any wrongdoing on the part of the officer,he will not be spared,” Deven Bharti Addl CP (Crime) said.

Sources, however, claimed that enough incriminating circumstances had been found to indict Shinde, and that he would be suspended next week. Previous allegations of an alleged nexus with the underworld would also carry weight in the decision on his suspension, said officers.

According to a top Mumbai Police officer,Shinde was probed for links with deported gangster Abu Salem following the kidnapping of Milton Plastics managing director Chiranjeev Vaghani from near his residence in Malabar Hill in February 2000.
