A 42-year-old man was allegedly killed by his four friends after he refused to bring their food parcel in Mumbai’s Sakinaka in the early hours of Tuesday. The Sakinaka police arrested one of the four accused from the spot and launched a search for the others.

According to the police, the deceased, Javed Ahmed Khan, a taxi driver by profession, lived with his four friends in the Jarimari area at Sakinaka. His four younger friends, all natives of his village in Pratapgarh in Uttar Pradesh, are also taxi drivers, and they had all been staying together for seven to eight years.

The arrested accused was identified as Shehbaaz Khan, 27. During interrogation, Shehbaaz confessed that their dinners came from a hotel in the vicinity, and whoever came home early would usually bring the dinner. Over the last three days, Javed had been bringing the dinner parcel from the hotel, but he refused to do so Monday night, he said.

When the five friends reached their room around 1 am, they started arguing over getting the food. During the argument, Javed allegedly said he was not their servant who would bring dinner every day. He said they also needed to arrive early, and each one of them should be responsible for it, as per the police.

The argument turned into a fight and Shehbaaz and others allegedly picked up a wooden stick and hit Javed on his head. The accused also kicked and punched the victim in his abdomen, said the police.

“Javed lost consciousness and began to bleed. Neighbours gathered and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Datta Nalawade.

A police team apprehended Shehbaaz, while the other accused fled from the scene. The Sakinaka police have formed four teams to search for them. The police are keeping close watch at the railway terminus so the accused cannot flee from the station, said Nalawade.
