An inspector of the Security Guard Board,Mumbai and Thane, was arrested by the Mumbai Unit of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Tuesday for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 12,000. The accused was allegedly arrested red-handed from a hotel in Fort when he accepted the bribe from a manager of a leading security agency.
ACB officers said they arrested the inspector,Ratnakar Mhatre, after receiving a complaint against him from the manager of a security firm.
Mhatre told the manager of a security firm at Veer Nariman Road,Fort site that due to some irregularities in the agencys documents, all employees hired in the past eight years would have to be relieved. Mhatre then asked for the address of the agencys main office, and went there, said an ACB officer.
The officer said Mhatre then went to the Opera House office of the agency and met some senior officials.
He told them that there was some problem with the agencys documents, and that he would complain against them. He warned them that the labour department and the police would cancel their license, which would get them into legal trouble. He then left leaving his mobile number, said the officer.
The officer said Mhatre told the manager to pay him a bribe of Rs 10,000 to avoid a complaint being filed.
After trying to reason, they relented and paid Mhatre Rs 10,000. The demands, however, did not stop there. Mhatre went to the site again and told them to pay him Rs 2,000 every month and demanded Rs 14,000 up front as payment for the next seven months, the officer said.
A complaint was then registered against Mhatre at the ACB office.
We received the complaint and then began probing the allegations. A trap was laid at a hotel in Fort where Mhatre was called. When he accepted Rs 12,000,we caught him red-handed. We have booked him and further investigations are on, said the officer.
