Jon Pritkin interacts with students of Ryan
Ryan International School invited Jon Pritkin,Guinness Record Holder in 2009 for rolling frying pans in 30 seconds,to interact with students and talk about anti-bulliying.
Pritkin tore a phone book in half, bent a steel rod with his teeth, broke a baseball bat on his knee and rolled a metal frying pan with his hands like a sandwich wrap,to draw the attention of the children and then spoke to them on how he suffered abuse at the hands of children and elders for having a speech impediment and learning disability coupled with a weight problem. He graduated, thanks to his never-give-up attitude.
He spoke to students of Ryan International School ICSE (Malad) to inspire them to stand up for classmates who may be the target of bullies and to convince those who are victims of bullying never to give up. He narrated numerous instances where he was bullied and incurred abuse from peers and neighborhood children and elders. He said,When you make fun of someone,it hurts. Words hurt. The marks of stitches on his chin stand proof of his being tripped in childhood by fellow mates. It was in his high school that a teacher befriended him and spent time with him and helped him overcome his speech problems.
He told students to confide in parents and teachers so that they understand the child being a victim of bulliying and take necessary corrective measures. It is necessary today to be cautious as children are bullied even on social networking sites. He mentioned that his wife and mother were the source of strength to achieve what he is today and said he found out at a later stage that his daughter was also a victim of bullying at school. Pritkin felt that had he confided in someone,he could have dealt with the problem better rather than being withdrawn and even contemplating suicide.
This being his first visit to the city, the Ryan International Group of Institutions have scheduled his visits to their schools in Sanpada,Nerul and Kharghar.
Neti Srinivasan,COO of Ryan International Group of Institutions, said such interactive sessions with leading personalities are a common aspect of the group to generate a sense of awareness among students and to bring about a sense of involvement in them to help their fellow classmates. He said it was essential to educate the parents and the teachers about bulliying, both within and outside classrooms so that this anomaly can be dealt with accordingly.
