Little chefs of New Horizonites
We all eat to live, don’t we but the young gourmets of Grade 5 of New Horizon Public School,Airoli proved right the opposite With a cause. They created their very own ‘Fun-n-Food Village’ under the guidance of their teachers in their school basement on February 16. The purpose of this activity was to apply the mathematical concept of Profit and Loss in our daily lives. Alongside, children experienced the joy of giving,by donating their profits to charity.
Stalls of various healthy, home made food items like sandwiches, dhoklas and idlis were sold to children and teachers using the coupon system. It was humouring yet humbling to see little kids dressed up as chefs complete with hats and aprons. The inviting posters shouting out ‘Come taste me!’ reminded one of an eye-catching TV ad.
Creative poster making and slogan writing by children to advertise their stalls gave them a chance to exhibit and improve upon their presentation and creative writing skills in English . Though their teachers were a guiding force in every step, organizing and handling the food items, stalls and collection of coupons on their own enabled them to assimilate the concepts of selling, profit and loss beyond books. They also got a glimpse of how a business actually works behind the polish and shine, and the hard work involved.
“The real challenge of education is to produce individuals who are capable of handling real life situations under stress in a stipulated time frame. Exposure to a simulated real life experience prepares them to face a similar challenge in future,” believes their Headmistress (Primary) Monalisa Basu. Along with learning through fun ,the students were also judged on various aspects in Maths and English as part of their Formative Assessment.
Impressed by the efforts of the children and teachers, their principal Mrs. Bulbul Sengupta remarked,”Integrating the curriculum into the daily lives should be the main motive of education.”
