Teachers: You make a difference

A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.” These words of Henry Adams make so much sense as I look back on the years in school. I find a great source of what I am today closely linked with my teachers. Teachers are the destiny shapers, nation builders whose life is a reflection of sacrifice, dedication and commitment.

We are in the information technology age; the 21st century classroom is changing at a rapid pace and so is the role of a teacher. On one hand,it may seem that technology has made the role and responsibilities of the teacher outdated, but on the other the role has grown immensely as they are now expected to be tech-savvy,computer literate and at the cutting edge of education. So,the role of teachers cannot be outmoded. Teachers have to develop students into effective critical thinkers and life-long learners with a strong sense of social responsibility.

Today, teachers must embrace new teaching strategies. They cannot afford to be just lecturers or transmitters of knowledge but need to be facilitators and resource personnel as is said by Mark Van Doren,“The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery”.

On the occasion of Teachers’ Day,I would like to exhort all the teachers for your dedicated service to mankind. You are the most important factor in the education process. On this day,we remember your valuable contribution. Let us believe that teachers were, are and will continue to be the guiding light. “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)

Wishing you a Happy Teachers’ Day.
