Sanjay Raut says Emergency a five-decade-old event, time to move forward

Raut alleged that the country is currently witnessing an undeclared Emergency, marked by what he described as “massive levels” of corruption and crony capitalism.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut on Wednesday slammed the BJP for observing June 25 as Samvidhan Hatya Divas (Constitution Murder Day), adding that Emergency was a five-decade-old event and that it was time to move forward rather than remain trapped in the past.

Raut defended the imposition of the Emergency by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975, stating it was done within the constitutional framework and lifted within the stipulated time to facilitate fresh Lok Sabha elections two years later.

“The Constitution has provisions to impose Emergency when there are attempts to create anarchy through internal and external threats. Indira Gandhi followed due process, sought Parliament’s approval and called a special session,” the Rajya Sabha MP said.

Raut alleged that the country is currently witnessing an undeclared Emergency, marked by what he described as “massive levels” of corruption and crony capitalism. He accused the present regime of targeting Opposition leaders by branding them as Naxals and anti-nationals.

“Indira Gandhi never did this. She revoked the Emergency within the given time frame and held elections. Her party lost and accepted the people’s verdict,” he said.

Raut’s remarks come in the backdrop of the Union government’s move last year to officially observe June 25 as Samvidhan Hatya Divas to mark the anniversary of the Emergency’s proclamation. The Shiv Sena (UBT) is an ally of the Congress in the Opposition INDIA bloc.
