Police investigation into the murder of 34-year-old Saraswati Vaidya by her live-in partner, 56-year-old Manoj Ramesh Sane, has revealed that Sane gave buttermilk laced with insecticide to Vaidya to kill her and concocted a story to save himself from punishment. He said Vaidya died by suicide after consuming poison, and because he was afraid of being framed by the police, he tried to dispose of her body.

Sane who allegedly purchased the insecticide from a store in Borivali has been identified by the storekeeper, police said. The name and batch number of sold out insecticide in the store register have matched with the chemical seized from Sane’s flat, police said, adding the storekeeper’s statement has been recorded.

A police officer privy to the investigation told The Indian Express that Sane and Vaidya had been living together since 2014, but their relationship turned tumultuous over the past six months. Vaidya suspected that Sane was unfaithful and regularly quarrelled with him. On June 3, Vaidya fought with Sane over the same issue and told him that he doesn’t behave with her like old times. Vaidya then refused to allow him to sleep in the bedroom and told him to sleep in the hall. Frustrated over this, Sane decided to kill her, the officer said.

Sane allegedly killed Vaidya on June 4 in their rented flat in phase 7 of Mira Road. He then chopped her body into pieces using tree and tile cutters. To dispose of the body parts easily, he boiled them in a cooker and roasted some of them, gradually discarding them in different places, including a nullah nearby. On June 7, Sane’s neighbours informed police about a strong, foul
smell emanating from Sane’s house, following which police found out about the murder.

In order to prevent the stench after chopping the body, Sane applied eucalyptus oil to the pieces and regularly sprayed air fresheners in the flat. Police seized five bottles of eucalyptus oil from his room, and recorded statements of shopkeepers from whom Sane purchased the buttermilk, eucalyptus oil and air fresheners.

The Nayanagar police have approached the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a forensic psychological test and layer voice analysis of Sane, as he was not cooperating in the investigation by concealing important information. Sane is also undergoing a psychiatric examination at Sir JJ Hospital, police said.

Apart from searching online for information on disposing of a body and preventing it from smelling, police said that Sane also searched for information on human body structure so he could chop the body easily.
