An RTI activist was attacked on Friday night by four persons in Kandivali. Police officers said Mehul Kataria (39) was walking when he was attacked by the four assailants, who brandished a chopper and a hammer.
Kataria suffered injuries to his head and abdomen and was rushed to Bhagwati Hospital for treatment. As people gathered, the four assailants ran away.
Senior Police Inspector Hareshwar Pimple said a case has been registered against the four persons. He said Kataria has identified two assailants.
Kataria told us he identified two of his attackers Rakesh Rathod and Rajesh Nagaria, who he alleges are cricket bookies. We have registered an FIR under Section 324 of the Indian Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon, Pimple said.
Kataria alleged he had requested the police for protection as he sensed threat from the two accused. The bookies and their associates wanted to harm me as I had helped the police bust their operation in January this year by giving them information. I had requested the police to provide me protection, but they failed to do so.
Pimple, however, said they had not got any order to give him protection.
