The death of an identified man at Dadar railway station on Sunday has led to conflicting versions from the railway authorities and the police about the reported delay in calling an ambulance. The man, said to have been hit by a train around 1 am,and who was probably dead as his body was reportedly severed in two places, lay on the platform for hours. Finally,a doctor reached the place and declared him dead.
Mumbai police say cops on duty informed the station master at Dadar, under CR,and asked for an ambulance. The ambulance did not arrive but a doctor came and declared the person dead. The body was then taken for post-mortem.
The Railway officials state that owing to a strike in the ambulance office,it was not available on time. They added that they called for a railway doctor and a railway ambulance too. As per rule,an ambulance is called when a person is injured and in case of death, the police do the panchnama and take the body to a hospital for post-mortem in a hearse.
Nobody knew whether he was alive or dead. Anyway, the ambulance was called by the station master at 9 am,and after the panchnama, the body was taken to Sion Hospital, said a source.
Shivaji Shinde,Senior Police Inspector,Dadar,CR informed,Our policemen asked the Station Master to call an ambulance. But it was called around 9 am,after 8 hours.
S Mudgerikar,Chief Public Relation officer,CR did not agree with police version. The station master was informed at 2.30 pm. He tried dialling 1298 to call an ambulance. But as there was a strike,it did not come. At last, the railway doctor reached there and declared him dead. His body was severed into three parts. So,there was no possibility of him being alive. As a rule,an ambulance is called only for an injured person. For deaths, the police take the body in a hearse after panchanama. But today, the railway ambulance reached the spot and he was taken to Sion hospital for post-mortem, said Mudgerikar.
