To ensure the safety of commuters, the Railways and the state police have been asked to seal all the unathorised entry points at stations and to get rid of hawkers and beggars on the premises. The decision was taken in a joint meeting of the police and the Railways called by Minister of State (Home) Satej Patil on Tuesday.
The Railway Police has reported a series of crimes in which the commuters standing near the doors were hit by stones. One of the reasons for such incidents is the easy access to the railway premises.
The Railways have been told to plug the illegal entry points to curb trespassing. Ten stations have been selected for this, said an officer present at the meeting. These stations include Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST),Chembur,Ghatkopar,Mulund,Churchgate,Bandra,Andheri,Borivali,Malad etc. The agencies have also been told to review the security of crucial stations by next week.
To make the stations safer and better for commuting, agencies like the traffic police,Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation will also be involved.
On Sunday, the body of a 45-year-old man was found hanging in a CST-bound train at Thane. Earlier, the body of a woman with stab injuries was found in a second-class compartment of an empty train that was parked in a railway shed in Kalwa.
