RGJAY: Dialysis accounts for maximum number of procedures

Data shows growing demand for dialysis and its escalating rates due to high demand and less facilities

TATA-MAIN Tata Memorial Hospital topped the list with 12,353 procedures related to cancer Express

Data released from the public health department indicates the growing demand of dialysis across the state and its escalating rates due to high demand and comparatively less facilities. Since the Rajiv Gandhi Jeevandayee Arogya Yojana (RGJAY) was first rolled out in July 2012, of the over 2.28 lakh surgeries and therapies that have taken place in the last two years in the state, dialysis alone accounts for a susbstantial 14.8 per cent (33,028 therapy count).

Next in line were angioplasty operations which occupied six per cent of the total surgeries (14,682) and palliative chemotherapy which accounted for five per cent (13,037). Long bone fractures accounted for 12,106 surgeries since 2012 while another form of angioplasty (PTCA with stents) recorded 8,665 surgeries in all 35 districts in the state.

As per the data, cost of dialysis has soared in Mumbai and Pune since 2011, where dialysis is in huge demand. While it rose from Rs 1,650 to Rs 1,750 in Mumbai, in Pune the rise was steeper— from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,900— with a whopping 90 per cent increase.

Meeta Lochan, public health secretary, said that a collaborative data from all the hospitals was also gathered to check which hospitals served maximum patients under the RGJAY. Noticeably, in government as well as private-run hospitals, cancer hospitals served the maximum patients under RGJAY.

In the government-run facilities, Tata Memorial Hospital topped the list with 12,353 procedures related to cancer followed by Parel-based KEM hospital that had 9,934 operations since 2012.

The three other hospitals were JJ, Nair and Sion. In private hospitals, Solapur-based Ashwini Rural Cancer Research and Relief Society provided 8,440 procedures under RGJAY. Sevenhills hospital(Mumbai), MMRI Kamalnayan (Aurangabad), Saibaba hospital (Ahmednagar) and Lalbaug Raja Dialysis center (Mumbai) all came next with over 3,000 operations in each.
