A Rs 100 crore increase in funds allocated for the repair and redevelopment of dilapidated cessed buildings in Mumbai was announced by minister of state for housing Sachin Ahir in the Legislative Council Wednesday.
The fund has been increased from Rs 100 crore to Rs 200 crore.
There are 14,972 cessed buildings in the city and repairs will be carried out by the Mumbai buildings repairs and reconstruction board of Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA).
The issue of a fund crunch being faced by the repair board had been raised by Shiv Sena legislator Ramdas Kadam who had said that Rs.100 crore was inadequate for redevlopment.
In a written reply, chief minister Prithviraj Chavan stated that the repair board currently gets Rs 50 crore from BMC,Rs 40 crore from the state and Rs 10 crore from MHADA.
Ahir also said that the amendments made to clause 33 (9) of the Development Control Rules had not received much of a response.
The amendment allows a higher vertical limit when building clusters in a minimum area of one acre are redeveloped.
He said only 10 proposals had been received by the state after the amendment was made.
A committee has been constituted under the principal secretary of the urban development department which will recommend further amendments to the clause, said Ahir.
A recent study by Mumbai Transformation Support Unit revealed that less than eight per cent of the total cessed buildings in the city have been redeveloped since 1999.
