The collective progress of the Metro lines, as per the MMRDA, is set to significantly redefine the transportation infrastructure of the MMR in the coming years.The construction of several Metro lines in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), which are being overseen by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), are going on apace.
Substantial headway has been made on all Metro lines under construction, excluding the city’s first underground Metro line 3 (Colaba-SEEPZ) being executed by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) and overseen by the MMRDA, the state-appointed nodal agency.
Sixty per cent work on the elevated Metro Line 2B, spanning 23.643 km from D N Nagar, Andheri West, to Mandale, Mankhurd, with 20 stations, has been completed so far. Contracts for railway substation construction and other essential electrical work have been awarded and six train sets have been received for deployment on this line. It’s anticipated that this Metro line will generate around 3,380 new jobs. The expected deadline for completion of the line is June 2025.
Metro Lines 4 and 4A cover a distance of 35.2 km, commencing from Wadala and concluding at Kasarvadavali, Thane, with an extension of Metro Line 4A from Kasarawadavalli, Thane, to Gaimukh, Ghodbunder Road, also in Thane. Civil work for these elevated Metro lines has achieved 65 per cent completion. This line is expected to be ready by mid-2025.
The initial phase of Metro Line 5, spanning 11.8 km between Thane and Bhiwandi, with six stations, is nearing completion, boasting an impressive progress rate of 82.72 per cent. The deadline for completion is December 2025.

Metro Line 5 Phase 2 (Bhiwandi-Kalyan), approved last year, will have a 3-km underground stretch between Dhamankar Naka and Temghar, both in Bhiwandi. The line is 11.8-km long.
Similarly, Metro Line 6, an elevated route covering 15.31 km from Swami Samarth Nagar (Lokhandwala Complex) to Vikhroli with 13 elevated stations, has achieved approximately 73.25 per cent progress in overall civil work completion. The expected completion deadline is December 2024.
Moving on to Metro Line 7A, an extension of the operational Metro Line 7, progress stands at 24.24 per cent. This line involves both an elevated stretch of 0.924 km and an underground twin-tunnel system spanning 2.5 km between Andheri East and CSMIA. The tunneling completion deadline is December 2024 and thereafter commercial operations are expected to take place after obtaining all safety clearances in 2025.
Metro Line 9, extending 10.855 km as a northern extension of Metro Line 7 from Dahisar East to Mira Bhayander, comprising eight elevated stations, has reached a 77 per cent completion milestone. The line is expected to be ready by June 2025.
Meanwhile, tendering for civil work on Metro Line 12, extending from Kalyan to Taloja, is ongoing, alongside the process of obtaining forest clearance.
Currently, Metro Lines 1 (Ghatkopar to Versova), 2A (Dahisar to DN Nagar), and 7 (Dahisar East to Andheri East) are operational.
