Psy out

Vibrasphere feels the success of psytrance lies in its ‘meditational’ feel

After feasting on Israeli psychedelic trance band Infected Mushroom recently,Mumbai is now ready to treat itself to another—Sweden-based Vibrasphere. Known for their progressive psytrance albums like Lime Structure and Archipelago, the band members — Rickard Berglof and Robert Elster — will be performing at Aurus,Juhu,on September 3.

“We wanted to create a sphere of good vibrations, that’s why the name Vibrasphere,” says Berglof of the band that was formed in the summer of 1998. It’s the band’s first performance in India and they are rather excited. “We will be playing loads of electronic progressive psytrance,” he says. Berglof assures that that have a lot of Indian influences. “You will see that in our upcoming music.”

While Vibrasphere has its roots in trance, the duo have never limited themselves to just one genre. “We always blend in a lot of different styles. Over the years,we have produced both dance music for the masses and laid-back electronic music for our niche fans.”

Unlike other mainstream genres of music like hip hop, rock, jazz and reggae, psytrance has just started gaining popularity and has maintained its niche fan following. “When we first discovered psytrance back in the early ’90s,I thought it was just another ‘acid home thing’ that would blow over in just a few years but look where it has reached now. I also think that a lot of artistes should push themselves a bit more and change their sounds,” said Berglof. The band feels that the main reason for the popularity of psytrance is its ‘meditational’ feel.
