The city saw widespread protests Friday as journalists associations,political parties and womens groups held demonstrations at Churchgate,Azad Maidan and Fort areas after a young photojournalist was gangraped in the compound of Shakti Mills in Lower Parel Thursday.
The BJP,led by city-unit president Ashish Shelar and Vinod Tawde,leader of Opposition in the state council held demonstrations at Azad Maidan. Around 700 women from the party participated in the rally demanding action against the culprits.
Shelar said,Such heinous crimes do not project a good image of the city. It was always known as the safest city.
Many social activists and members of political parties visited the Jaslok Hospital to meet the victim. Following the victims parents refusal,the hospital management turned down their request. Women members of National Congress Party (NCP) and the Shiv Sena also visited the hospital.
Aditi Kelkar,a member of Dakshata committee and a social activist,who visited the hospital said,It is high time that such brutalities be stopped, she said.
Meanwhile,the Aam Aadmi Party(AAP) also organised a protest at Azad Maidan near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. Anjali Damania,a party member,said they were holding a peaceful rally to protest against the incident.
Expressing solidarity with the victim,over 350 media persons held silent protests. They held placards which read We want justice. Women are no longer safe in Mumbai.
Senior journalist Jatin Desai said,We have conveyed our concerns to Home Minister R R Patil. The security of women security cannot be compromised with.
A photographer said while enthusiasm for field reporting was necessary,journalists need to be careful. Freshers are enthusiastic about their job,However,no one gives them orientation about the kind of work they are going to do, she said.
