The rebellion by Nationalist Congress Party leader Ajit Pawar has led to many former detractors of Sharad Pawar rallying behind the octogenarian leader. On Monday, former chief minister and Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan, who shares a tepid relationship with Pawar, made it a point to be with him in Karad.

As Pawar reached Karad to pay obeisance at the memorial of his political mentor Yashwantrao Chavan, the Congress leader made it a point to be there, receive him and join him throughout the programme. Both even shared the stage from where Pawar spoke.

The two are known to have an uneasy relationship. In the 1999 Lok Sabha polls, NCP’s Shrinivas Patil had defeated Chavan from the then Karad Lok Sabha constituency. After Chavan’s comeback as the chief minister, his strict action in the irregularities of Maharashtra State Central Cooperative Bank as well as proactive stand in the irrigation scam led to friction between him and the NCP. Pawar too had targeted Chavan over his style of functioning of keeping files pending.

On Monday, however, both were seen together, a day after Pawar faced one of the biggest challenges ever thrown at him by his nephew.

“Of course, it was needed to go there and meet him. It was a display of solidarity on behalf of Maha Vikas Aghadi. The three parties have come together on an agenda of opposing BJP which is hell bent on destroying the democratic and secular fabric of this country. The MVA must remain strong,” he told The Indian Express.
