The Deonar police had earlier arrested Deepak Gaikwad (35),who claimed that the recently arrested Arvind Deshmukh (27) had planned the rape and murder. Deshmukh has been absconding since August 30,when police found the victim’s body. Deshmukh was presented before a court Saturday and remanded in police custody till September 19.

“We had kept a tab on a scrap dealer who frequently lent Deshmukh money,” said senior inspector Manohar Vichare.

Deshmukh was arrested when he visited the scrap dealer Friday.

Deshmukh told police that he had fled to his girlfriend’s residence in Pune after the crime.

The deceased lived alone at a tenement adjoining the railway premises in Govandi and knew Deshmukh. Police said the victim had not responded to Deshmukh’s

advances.
