Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis Thursday said the state power distribution company has proposed a phase-wise reduction in tariff rates from 2025 to 2030.

The proposal reportedly covers domestic, commercial, and industrial consumers of power supplied by Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MahaVitaran).

Fadnavis stated, “Almost 70 per cent residential consumers will see a huge 26 per cent drop in power tariff within five years. It will bring huge relief to these segments.”

If that happens, then the tariff for domestic consumers will come down to Rs 6 per unit from the present Rs 8.14 per unit. Similarly, for industrial consumers, the tariff will reduce from Rs 10.28 per unit to Rs 9.57 per unit. The tariff for commercial users may decline from Rs 16.57 to Rs 15.27 per unit.

In terms of percentage, domestic consumers will get 26 per cent relief, and industrial and commercial consumers will get eight and six per cent relief, respectively.

In the first year, the tariff for domestic consumers will be reduced by 10 per cent, followed by a phase-wise overall reduction of 26 per cent by 2030.

“With the Mukhyamantri Saur Krishi Vahini Yojana 2.0 project underway, the state government is determined to put the entire agriculture grid on solar. This will not only help farmers to avail electricity during the daytime but also ensure uninterrupted power supply to the agriculture sector.

“The solar-driven agriculture sector will also mean the government will not be required to provide Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 cross-subsidy to farmers. This amount would be partly utilised in solar infrastructure. The ease of financial stress will result in power tariff restructuring, helping the government to reduce tariffs for domestic, industrial, and commercial consumers,” Fadnavis said.

“In the past, there were petitions seeking a 10 per cent hike in tariff rates every year. For the first time, MahaVitaran has filed a petition seeking a reduction in power tariffs to help consumers,” he added.
