The Mumbai Police Crime Branch is likely to file chargesheet in the quadruple murder of youths near Kurar village in Malad on June 5 on Monday, senior officers said.

“The chargesheet in the Kurar killings will be ready in the next two days. It is a clear case in which murder charges will be put on the accused. Our contention will be that the murders were not committed at the spur of the moment and that they were pre-meditated and cold-blooded. This is borne out by the fact that the main accused had called up his friends and instructed them to draw out the victims on various pretexts. Weapons were also carried in anticipation of the crime they were about to commit,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Deven Bharti.

“The stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA),however, could not be applied in the case as the accused were not working as an organised syndicate. We had closely examined the possibility of applying MCOCA in the case,” said Bharti.

A total of 15 accused have been arrested in the case so far with the police still on the lookout for two accomplices. The main accused in the case,Uday Pathak, was arrested by the crime branch from Varanasi on June 22 after fleeing the city immediately after the killings. In the first week of July,he also led the police to the knife he had used to kill the four men from Kasam Baug atop a hillock in Malad (East).

Pathak has 16 offences recorded against him in Dindoshi,Kurar and other police stations. The crime branch is also probing whether he was involved in helping builders secure Slum Rehabilitation Authority projects by threatening residents of tenements.
