The Mumbai unit of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested a senior police inspector of Vikhroli police station on Thursday after he was caught accepting Rs 25,000 of the Rs 1 lakh bribe. The arrested officer,Ravindra Javkar, had allegedly demanded Rs 1 lakh from a person who was granted bail in several cases by a sessions court,ACB sources said.
The complainant works as an octroi clearing agent. The cases were registered at the same police station where Javkar was in-charge, an ACB officer said.
Javkar told him that he would create problems and ensure that he doesnt get full bail unless he was paid Rs 1 lakh in cash and given several goods. Javkar asked him for a mobile phone,a music system for his car,a watch and an alcohol bottle. The complainant said he gave Javkar some of the things that were demanded, said the officer.
The complainant also told ACB officers that Javkar had demanded Rs 6,000 every month from him as the octroi clearing took place under the police stations jurisdiction. According to the officer, the complainant approached the ACB after he was asked to get Javkar a raincoat and threatened that he would have problems with his bail if he did not comply.
The complainant approached us saying he had received several messages from Javkar on his mobile phone regarding the demands. We began probing the allegations. After it was learnt that the allegations were true,a case was registered against Javkar, the officer said.
