There was a time when one would grab a beer at a pub and listen to Midival Punditz. While a chunk of the audience loved mainstream Bollywood,a few did dig Punditz, who belted it out on their own, producing new music and gaining fans with every gig. Even the most hungover did not think the two would meet.

So when Gaurav Raina and Tapan Raj of Midival Punditz, along with percussionist Karsh Kale, got down to do the background score of the Farhan Akhtar starrer Karthik Calling Karthik, there were enough sceptics. But the duo, plus Kale, have done it right, yet again. They have brought up the tempo a few notches, done some exploratory improvisations and come up with a charming background score for Vijay Lalwani’s film that releases next month.

Says Raj: “This is our first background score for an entire film. Earlier,we had done bits for Monsoon Wedding,Don and Fashion. Karthik Calling Karthik has allowed us to continue our style of combining electronica with classical music. We have just presented it in a cinematic platform. We have run the gamut of musical sounds from a full orchestral setup to rock and jazz to edgy electronica.”

The songs for Karthik Calling Karthik, however, have been composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. Do the Punditz fear that they would steal their thunder? Raj is not worried. “It depends on the audience. I am sure they are going to enjoy the songs as well as the background score,” he says.

Punditz and Kale will be working together on film scores from now onwards. “I have had a long association with Gaurav and Tapan, making music and touring. I am looking forward to the release of the music,” says Kale.

If we consider their tweets and Facebook status updates that went “Endless nights in the studio, finished with three reels of KCK. Sounding great”,they seem to have worked hard on it. Kale and the Punditz were burrowed at Dhruv Ghanekar’s Blue Frog Studios in Mumbai for almost six weeks while they racked their brains to come up with “a catchy score that was completely in accordance with the theme of the film,” says Raj.

Their sound — which they call modern with a classical approach — seems to be catching on. They have already done the music for Ajay Naidu’s indie crossover film,Ashes, which releases this year.
