The onset of the rains has not brought much respite to Mumbaikars who now will have to shell out more from their pockets as water charges. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Tuesday increased water charges by 8 per cent starting June 16.

The proposal is a part of the standing committee’s agenda for the week. BMC is estimating a gain of Rs 107.02 crore from the increased taxes.

Currently, the BMC charges Rs 3.24 per 1,000 litres for households. The proposal will be sent to the standing committee, the most important statutory committee of the civic body, on Wednesday.

A senior civic official from the hydraulic department said, “In 2012, we had sought permission from the standing committee to increase charges every year. We are sending this proposal only as information as the approvals have already been sought.”

The increase in water charges means an automatic increase in sewage charges which is a 60 per cent component of the entire water charges paid by residents. With octroi being phased out from 2016, the civic body is looking at alternative financial sources from the next fiscal. The civic body is already working on a solid waste management (SWM) cess, transport cess and a fire tax to be imposed from the next fiscal.
