Over 45% expansion work completed at five platforms in CSMT

Nearly 45% of the expansion work at the five platforms in Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai has been completed so far.

According to Central Railway, these platforms from 10 to 14, serving intercity and other mail/express trains, once extended in full length, will help increase the number of train coaches from the existing 12 or 18 to 24. Further, these five platforms will also improve the mobility of trains in the busy CSMT-Dadar section.

The extension work at the five platforms has been divided into two phases. Phase 1 includes extension of platform number 10/11 (island platform) which includes increasing the length to 680 metres from existing 298 metres, removal of overhead electric masts, portals and its relocations, removal of 37 signalling and telecom obstructions and its relocations, dismantling of nine old washing pit lines, stabling sidings, dismantling and linking of plain track of 1.5 km among others.

Whereas Phase 2 work includes expansion of platform number 12/13,14 from existing 385 metres to 690 metres, removal of signalling and telecom obstructions etc.

According to the CR, many work have been completed including dismantling of existing Carnac Bunder Road overbridge, work for object controller rooms, sub-station building work, laying and linking of track to a length of 2 km, among others.

These five-platform expansion work has cost Rs 62.12 crore and till date Rs 41.23 crore has been utilised on the project.

The said project will largely benefit intercity travellers from Mumbai to Pune and Mumbai to Nashik. Once the platform is constructed in full length, these trains will be able to accommodate more number of coaches, augmenting the capacity.
