Following a day of moderate showers interspersed with occasional intense spells of rain on Tuesday, the IMD has sounded an orange warning, indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall in a few places, for Mumbai and its neighbouring district of Thane for today.
According to IMD bulletin on Tuesday, the city and its suburbs are expected to witness increased rain over the course of next two days, with the weather bureau extending a yellow alert for Thursday (July 6) and Friday (July 7).
Weather experts have attributed the strengthened downpour to an offshore trough developing from South Gujarat to Kerala as well as upper air cyclonic circulation over south Gujarat. Sushma Nair, scientist at IMD Mumbai told The Indian Express that the heavy rainfall expected is due to strong westerlies.
After a week of incessant downpour, the city had witnessed subdued, moderate showers throughout Monday. Santacruz observatory recorded 22 mm of rainfall and the Colaba observatory registered 42 mm on Monday.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the severity of rain picked up with some pockets of the city witnessing moderate wet spells amidst a yellow alert warning which the IMD issued on Tuesday afternoon. Data procured from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) monitoring apparatus showed that until 6.00 pm on Tuesday, the island city division recorded 30.94 mm of rainfall. Furthermore, the western suburbs recorded 14.83 mm of downpour while the eastern suburbs registered 10.39 mm of showers.
With heightened rain activity, the city’s mercury levels have dipped. The Santacruz observatory recorded maximum temperatures of 29 degree Celsius, two degrees below normal.

Addressing the increased rainfall during monsoons, Raghu Murtugudde, Earth System Scientist and visiting professor at IIT Bombay explained, “The heavy rainfalls over Mumbai, Gujarat, north west India as well as Pakistan have increased because of the northern Arabian Sea warming. Winds are strong now as they should be but because the Arabian Sea is so warm, it picks up a lot more moisture.”
