Despite extending the deadline for opinions from the stakeholders on the proposed new syllabus, the Maharashtra state board has received a lacklustre response from public. The state board has received only 25 suggestions/opinions from across Maharashtra.
The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHE) in the first week of November uploaded the proposed syllabus for classes IX to XII on its website and had invited opinions, suggestions and objections from parents, academicians and other stakeholders by November 25. However, failing to get a good response by then, board officials extended the deadline to November 30.
We waited for the response from public till November 30. We have received 25 suggestions/comments on the the proposed syllabus through emails and letters. We would go through them and submit a report to the state government, after which we will decide if these suggestions can be included in the final syllabus to be implemented, Ujwala Patil, chairperson of MSBSHE,said.
The state board invited public opinion as this is the first time it has made major changes and added several new things to the syllabus. However, parents say they were unaware about the proposed syllabus being uploaded on the boards website.
Khyati Shah,a parent, said,How are parents supposed to know about the proposed syllabus? No parent checks the board website regularly.
G Mehta,a parent of a student of Arya Vidya Mandir in Bandra, said,They could have sent letters or notices to schools to inform them as well as parents. They should extend the deadline further so that we can send our opinions and suggestions.
A principal of a south Mumbai school said,It is shocking. Even we did not know that public opinions and suggestions were invited. As a teacher,I too wish to send my opinion and suggestions.
However, the state board officials have no intention of extending the deadline. Patil said,We have given enough time for suggestions. We will,on Monday, send the state government whatever responses we have received and a report on the same. We will then await its nod before implementing the new syllabus.
