One killed in container yard fire

One person was killed and three others injured in a fire that broke out in a container yard in the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust area at Uran in Navi Mumbai on Wednesday.

One person was killed and three others injured in a fire that broke out in a container yard in the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust area at Uran in Navi Mumbai on Wednesday. Sources said the fire resulted in an explosion because the container had chemicals stored in it. The victims were checking the containers when the explosion took place around 1.45 pm.

Deepak Ghat,a resident of Sector 3 in Uran and an employee of the container company,was declared dead at the Indira Gandhi Hospital. Two unidentified persons were admitted to the MGM Hospital in Kamothe,while Gagan Tiwari (40) was admitted to the Indira Gandhi Hospital.

The police said when smoke started emanating from the container,the four men got in to check what was wrong. Soon,the explosion took place. Officers said the cause of the fire is still unknown. Seven fire engines and four water tankers were rushed to the spot,said Fire Brigade officials. “We are yet to verify the items in the container,” said DCP Ankush Shinde (Zone II).
