A local train crashed into the rear of another, which had halted at Mahim station,on Sunday afternoon, injuring eight commuters and disrupting services.

Western Railway sources said the moving train,an Andheri slow local, had been given the red signal between Mahim and Matunga but it “passed the red signal” and hit the rear of the other train,a Borivali local, which had been at platform 1 for three minutes, waiting for the signal to proceed.

WR had undertaken a mega-block between Mahim and Santacruz sections. It is not yet clear whether the crash,at 1.30 pm,was caused by a late application of brakes or a defect. It delayed subsequent trains by 15 to 20 minutes.

The Andheri local’s motorman S P Kolhe and guard S B Singh have been suspended. “An inquiry has been started,” said R S Chugh,Additional General Manager,WR.

Injured passengers were taken to hospital,DCP (WR) Anil Tamaichekar said. They were paid Rs 500 as compensation.

“I was lucky to survive. I jumped out just in time,” said V P Mishra, the guard at the rear of the Borivali train. As he saw the Andheri train coming,he shouted at commuters in the next compartment, telling them to jump with him.
