Two months after the Central Railway installed closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras in the lobbies of suburban stations where motormen and guards spend time between train runs,it will now place cameras in lobbies for drivers and guards of outstation trains. According to CR officials,CCTV cameras will be installed at various stations of the Mumbai division within 10 days.
Sources said tenders were invited on January 1 for supply, installation, wiring, testing and commissioning of CCTV cameras. The installation is likely to cost over Rs 27 lakh.
Though motormen, drivers and guards have protested the installation of cameras saying that the continuous watch on them will only add pressure,CR maintained that the step was taken to ensure that rules are followed.
A motormen on the condition of anonymity said,We have to have a meeting with CR officials to ensure that the footage will not be used against us. However,Satyaprakash,Chief Operations Manager of CR,said that the cameras are meant to check if rules are followed. In many divisions of Central Railway these cameras have already been installed. In Mumbai division also, these have been installed at many lobbies. But within 10 days, every lobby will have CCTV cameras, Satyaprakash said.
These cameras are being installed in that area where driver or guards sign the muster and go through the breathalyser test. Recently many drivers were found to have consumed alcohol. So,the installation of cameras will only improve the system and ensure safety, said a senior official.
AK Chandrani, assistant general secretary,Central Railway Mazdoor Sangh, said: Two months back, cameras were installed at lobbies for motormen and guards at CST and Panvel and other stations. Now,these will be installed at the lobbies for drivers and guards (outstation trains). This is aimed to ensure the safety.
