New ring bus service for office-goers in South Mumbai

The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport undertaking on Thursday inaugurated a new ring route bus service to cater to people working in South Mumbai.

The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking on Thursday inaugurated a new ring route bus service to cater to people working in South Mumbai.

The routes,called Fort Feri 1 and Fort Feri 2,will ferry passengers from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) to business hubs in South Mumbai like GPO,Fort Market,Reserve Bank of India,Old Custom House,Museum,Mantralaya,Vidhan Bhavan,NCPA,CCI,Churchgate station,Hutatma Chowk and Khadi Bhandar. The Fort Feri 1 will operate clockwise on this route,while the Fort Feri 2 will operate anti-clock wise.

“Commuters spend a lot of time and face a lot of hassles after after getting down at CST. This bus service,which has a good frequency,will solve the problem,” Mayor Shraddha Jadhav,who was present at the inauguration,said.

A ticket for the entire route will cost Rs 5 and there will be a bus every five minutes. Commuters can use their other regular bus passes,including the pass for Rs 40,on this route.

The service,which will be available between 8 am and 9 pm,will also have 20 low-floor buses equipped with a ramp for commuters in wheel chairs.

The Urban Design Research Institute (UDRI),an interactive forum for architects and urban designers,had devised a Fort Management Plan,one of the aspects of which was traffic,transport and promotion of public transport services in the Fort area. The Fort Feri ring route service was part of the plan.

The UDRI had presented the Fort Management Plan to the BEST and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation,following which the ring route service was selected for implementation,a UDRI spokesperson said.
