Its been over four decades since they were last here. But the concert tonight is sure to be worth the long wait. The London Symphony Orchestra, which last performed in India in 1964they dropped in at Delhi as part of a world touris just as excited to be in the country as they hope their Indian audiences will be to listen to them.
The orchestra, which performed the first of its Mumbai concerts last night at the Jamshed Bhabha Theatre,NCPA,will have its second performance tonight. Among other things, the 100-year-old orchestra is well-known for having performed the soundtrack for Alfred Hitchcocks The Man Who Knew Too Much.
McDowell explains that the Orchestra took so long to come back to India because they have a great deal of respect for Indian musical traditions. We know that India has a long and very rich history of music and we didnt want to come and impose our music on the country. But we see now that there are a lot of people who are informed and enjoy our music. So when the opportunity to perform here came,we grabbed it. But,of course, coming back here after the Mumbai concerts, will depend entirely on how the LSO is received by the concert-going public. We believe in a two-way relationshipwhile were happy to gift our music to people,we also hope to receive their love in return.
