New Horizon student suicide: Police discuss safety precautions with principals
Manoharan was produced in court on Wednesday and has been remanded to police custody till Friday.
A day after a school teacher was arrested in connection with the suicide of a 12-year-old student at the New Horizon school in Navi Mumbai, the police on Wednesday held a meeting with principals of schools in the Panvel – Khandeshwar area to discuss safety precautions and tips on interacting with students.
On Tuesday morning, Gaurav Kank, a Class VI student of the New Horizon school, allegedly jumped out of the window of his fourth-floor classroom after being slapped and scolded by his science teacher. The teacher, Saumya Manoharan, was subsequently arrested by the Khandeshwar police and charged with causing death by negligence and abetment to suicide.

“We held a meeting with principals and vice principals of various schools in our zone and discussed measures to prevent such incidents in the future. We advised them about basic safety precautions to be taken in schools to prevent students from coming to any harm, as well as the proper way to interact with students so as to not upset them.” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Sanjay Yenpure, Zone II, Navi Mumbai.
An officer who was present at the meeting added that one of the points under discussion was the change in mindset regarding corporal punishment. Meanwhile, Manoharan was produced in court on Wednesday and has been remanded to police custody till Friday.
