Another hit-and-run: 31-yr-old woman killed in Nashik as speeding car knocks her down

Police say the accused appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. We took his blood samples and sent it to the hospital for checking the alcohol content.

IN YET another hit-and-run case in the state, a 31-year-old woman in Nashik was killed when she was allegedly run over by a speeding car on Tuesday evening.

The woman, identified as Archana Shinde, was returning home after her work at a restaurant. Based on the vehicle registration number, the Nashik police tracked down the car driver, identified as Devchand Tidme (51), and arrested him. Police suspect that he was driving under the influence of alcohol.

Assistant Police Inspector Somnath Genje from Gangapur police station said that Archana Shinde worked at a restaurant nearby where she was a staff with the cleaning department.

After completing her shift, as she was walking back home, she was run over by a speeding Maruti A-Star vehicle. The driver did not stop the car after knocking her down, the inspector said.

A CCTV footage of the incident shows the car speeding away even as local residents rushed to help the woman and took her to the hospital where she was declared dead.

The police was alerted about the incident following which they registered an FIR in the matter and started looking for the accused.

Since the incident was captured on the CCTV camera, the police traced the driver based on the registration number of the four-wheeler. When the police reached his residence based on records, they were told he no longer resided there. The police then found out his new address from where he was placed under arrest. The accused was produced before the court, which was remanded him to police custody.

Genje said, “Prima facie, the accused appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. We took his blood samples and sent it to the hospital for checking the alcohol content.”

He added that the accused has a farm at his place based on which he made a living and had gone to his village recently. It was while he was returning that the incident took place.

“We will be interrogating him about from where he consumed the alcohol and where it was procured from,” the officer said.

The incident comes close in the heels of the hit-and-run case in Worli on Sunday where a BMW driver allegedly ran over a woman who along with her husband were on a bike.

While her husband survived the accident, the woman passed away. The driver Mihir Shah was arrested by the police on Tuesday.

Prior to this, there was outrage over the accident in Pune when the son of a builder allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol had run over two IT professionals going on a bike in the Kalyani Nagar area on May 19.

Meanwhile, in Nashik, a 45-year-old woman was run over by a truck Monday. The deceased, Nidhi Ware, had stepped out for shopping when the accident happened.
