THE POLICE and an animal welfare trust have rescued 43 cows which were kept illegally in a poor and unsafe conditions in Versova. The police have arrested a man for not taking adequate health and safety measures.

The police acted on the information provided by Karuna Mitra, an animal welfare and rights trust. The trust first verified information and then took the police to the spot.

The police first rescued 30 cows which were kept near the mangroves at Versova coast. Next day, again 13 more cows were found at the same place, and were subsequently rescued. There was no arrangement for fodder or water for the cows. They were tied, restricting their movement. No cleanliness was maintained, states the FIR.

“One cow had injuries on her leg and could not stand on her feet since past over a week. The accused person was not doing anything for her medication and was not even taking her to hospital. This prompted us to think that something fishy is out there and we acted along with the police,” said Jay Shah, animal protection officer from Karuna Mitra trust.

The rescued cows have been sent to a civic-run facility. The Versova police have charged the accused Lalji Yadav alias Munna under relevant sections of Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amended) Act, 1976, and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
