Proposing a heritage walk to honour the valour of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the Maharashtra Government on Wednesday approved a greenfield route project, worth Rs 250.27 crore, that will link the Maratha king’s martyrdom site at Tulapur and his memorial at Vadu Budruk in Pune district.

During a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, plans were finalised for constructing a road and a bridge over the Bhima River, which will provide direct access between the Tulapur martyrdom site and the Vadhu Budruk memorial.

District administration officials made a presentation of the Vadhu-Tulapur Development Plan to the state government on the occasion.

The total project cost has been estimated at Rs 532.51 crore, which includes developing allied infrastructure such as road connectivity, a museum, and other facilities at both locations.

This initiative follows the earlier approval of a development budget of Rs 282.24 crore for the martyrdom site and the memorial.

“With the approval of the road connecting the two historical sites as part of the Sambhaji Maharaj martyrdom site and memorial development plan, the overall project cost has now risen to Rs 532.51 crore,” said an officer with the Pune district administration.

The new road will be a greenfield route, ensuring smooth and convenient access for visitors to both historical locations. It is intended to be developed as a “heritage walk”, the officer added.

The updated plan also includes a 12-metre-wide spectator gallery on the proposed bridge over the Bhima River, where murals, statues, and other artworks depicting the life of the Maratha king will be displayed.

The development initiative encompasses a museum, a 10D studio with an 82-seat hall, a library, an administrative building, a souvenir shop, a 350-metre-long riverside platform, parking spaces, public toilets, and eateries at the martyrdom site in Tulapur.

The memorial for King Sambhaji in Vadhu Budruk will feature similar amenities, including a museum, administrative building, souvenir shop, a 120-meter-long riverside platform, parking, eateries, and public toilets. Both locations will also have a 100-foot-tall flagpole to display the flag of Hindavi Swarajya, established by the Marathas.

“The plan has recently received approval from the state government, and we will now proceed with the tender processing. The goal is to establish this area as a prominent tourist destination due to its historical significance. The construction is expected to be completed three years after the actual commencement of work,” stated an officer from the district administration.
