Mumbai University will get 49 new colleges from next academic year as the state government has approved the varsity’s perspective plan for the year 2024-25. Even as there is increased emphasis on colleges offering skill-oriented, professional courses, the majority (32) of the new colleges will offer traditional Arts, Science, Commerce courses.
Perspective plan indicates the roadmap for future development of the university. Considering the local social and economic needs and availability of job opportunities, including industry requirements, locations are identified to start new colleges for courses meeting the needs.
Following the proposed locations recommended by the respective universities, the state government approves a final plan. The state for the first time used Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to map the existing higher education institutes in the state and proposed the new ones.
Accordingly, 49 locations have been approved under Mumbai University’s jurisdiction. Varsity has now issued advertisements seeking applications from interested parties to open colleges on approved locations.
Mumbai University, which has its jurisdiction spread across multiple districts–Mumbai city and suburbs, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, with over 800 colleges affiliated to it, will now add more colleges in the list, from the next academic year.
Out of 49 locations, the highest (13) are in Thane district. This is followed by Mumbai suburban with 11. All other districts will have less than 10. As per the final approval, a total of 113 new courses will be offered at these 49 locations. Out of these, 93 are traditional ASC courses, 19 are law courses whereas only 1 course is in design.
