In an unprecedented delay, results of the exam for Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (B. SC.IT) in Mumbai University’s Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL) have been delayed by nearly 6 months.

These are 285 students enrolled in the third year of B.Sc. IT at MU’s IDOL, who have completed their course but are stuck due to a delay in result. They wrote their semester 5 exam in March 2023. Even as this result was never declared, they gave their semester 6 exam in July 2023. Students now continue to wait for the results of both semester exams.

A student, who is a working professional, said, “This is my second bachelor degree after the first one in physics. I am pursuing this because I want to study artificial intelligence (AI). Now, I have cleared the entrance for the masters course in my desired subject in a private college. But I can’t confirm admission because I do not have a degree certificate.”

Most of these students are working professionals and are frustrated by visiting the university nearly thrice a week seeking clarity on when their result will be out. “We completed the course aspiring for better job prospects. Now even after completion, we are missing out on opportunities because no company is going to process offer letters without a valid result document,” added another student.

Troubled students have now written to the Governor of Maharashtra Ramesh Bais in his capacity of Chancellor to all state universities. According to students the university has given no clear explanation . “Authorities keep saying results will be out soon,” he said.

Earlier this year in May, the Governor had cautioned Vice Chancellors of all state universities over delays in results. Noting that prospects of students are directly linked to declaration of results, the Governor, in a meeting addressing VCs had said that they would be held responsible in case of delays by their respective universities.

While the university confirmed the delay, it did not share any reason. An official from Mumbai University’s IDOL, said, “Assessment for B.sc.IT (IDOL) semester 5 and 6 exam papers has been completed. First, we will declare semester 5 results very soon, and then for semester 6.”
