Investigators said the US citizen, who is undergoing treatment for Parkinson’s disease, arrived in Mumbai in June. Two men, including a driver, were arrested on Sunday for allegedly stealing diamond-studded gold jewellery and a wrist watch worth Rs 26 lakh from the room of a US citizen staying in an upscale South Mumbai hotel in Colaba. The complainant, a 48-year-old man from West Virginia who is in Mumbai for medical treatment, reported the theft earlier this month.
According to Colaba police, the arrested accused have been identified as Hussein Hamid Sayyad (35), a Colaba resident with previous theft and assault cases against him, and Kiran Rajesh Thakur (55), a driver from Vile Parle who had been assisting the victim during his stay. Police have recovered a watch worth Rs 1 lakh from Hussein, while the jewellery is missing.
Investigators said the US citizen, who is undergoing treatment for Parkinson’s disease, arrived in Mumbai in June. A mutual acquaintance introduced him to Kiran, who offered help with travel to and from the hospital. On November 8, when the US citizen expressed interest in shopping for clothes and perfume, Kiran introduced him to Hussein, claiming he could assist as a local guide.
For three consecutive days from November 8, the US citizen went shopping with Hussein. On November 10, the two returned to the victim’s room after purchasing three watches. Police said the victim’s jewellery, including a gold chain and a diamond-studded gold bracelet worth Rs 25 lakh, was kept in the room.
Around 2 pm, the victim, feeling unwell, went to sleep. When he woke up an hour later, Hussein had left. He soon discovered that the jewellery and a watch with a green strap, valued at Rs lakh, were missing. After searching the room, he suspected Hussein and approached Colaba Police to file a complaint.
During the investigation, police concluded that Hussein and Kiran had conspired in the theft. When officers detained Hussein, he was found wearing the stolen watch. Both men were arrested on Sunday and produced before a court, which remanded them in police custody until November 20.
