Commuters who regularly use app-based cabs will continue to have to look for alternatives with drivers of Ola and Uber announcing that their strike will continue at least until Thursday.

For 10 days now, as many as 40,000 drivers of Ola and Uber have remained off the roads to demand an increase in their earnings. Despite meeting officials of the cab companies, the drivers have said they would remain on strike until they receive a written assurance from the companies.

“The companies are not giving us in writing that they will fulfil our promises. Our demands include increasing the base minimum fares and improving our working conditions. The companies are testing our patience. We will wait till Thursday or else our protest will turn violent,” said Ola driver Dileep Nikalje of the Maharashtra Rajya Kamgar Sangh. The drivers are likely to meet senior officials of Ola on Thursday.

The strike has led to a shortage of aggregator cabs on the roads. Commuters have had to switch to using black-and-yellow cabs.

An Uber driver said, “This is the worst Diwali for drivers. We have been out of operation for the past two weeks and companies are not agreeing to our demands.”

An Uber spokesperson said, “We continue to engage with all relevant stakeholders with a view to restoring services to the people at the earliest. We have always been and continue to be committed to sustainable driver earnings and to discuss all other issues raised by driver partners…” Ola did not comment on the issue. ENS
