Mumbai Rains Today LIVE Updates: Non- functional watering pumps, incomplete desilting, roads dug up: What paralysed Mumbai?

The first spell of monsoon rain caught Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation completely off-guard on Monday. As Mumbai witnessed the earliest onset of monsoon in its history, bringing the city to a near halt, the rains led to inundation of low-lying areas like King’s Circle to locations like Hindmata and Gandhi Market for several hours early in the morning and afternoon.

While the deadline for the BMC to complete all pre-monsoon preparations that includes essential infrastructure works such as road repairs, drain cleaning, and flood mitigation efforts is the first week of June, the early onset of rains caught the authorities, IMD and Mumbaikars off-guard.

Sources said that the Monday’s mayhem was largely a result of incomplete pre-monsoon work undertaken by BMC–desilting of drains and rivers and installation of dewatering pumps–and that led to issues of waterlogging and other related problems across the city. Besides, sources in the civic authority claim that the concretisation of dug up roads that were targeted till arrival of monsoon, also could not be completed.

Mumbai Rains Today Live Updates: Five youths stuck at waterfall area in Kharghar mountains due to rise in water levels; rescued

Five youths who had come from Shiv (Sion) in Mumbai for Varshahali in Kharghar mountains got stuck near the waterfall Monday afternoon due to a sudden increase in the water levels, owing to heavy rainfall.

The fire brigade personnel from Kharghar and a team of Kharghar police rescued them by crossing dry waterfall with the help of ropes.

Every year, the Navi Mumbai police issues a ban on going to the waterfall on Pandavkada during the monsoon. However, these orders are usually announced to the citizens in the beginning of June, and not in May.

Taking advantage of this, the five youths went to the mountain on Pandavkada for Varshahali on Monday. Due to sudden increase in water levels emerging from the waterfall at Kharghar mountains due to heavy rains, the five people got stuck as they failed to anticipate such high after levels.

After contacting the Kharghar fire station, the fire brigade personnel climbed up to the waterfall from the mountain and brought them safely down the mountain with the help of a rope.

After bringing them out of the dry mountain range, Senior Police Inspector Deepak Surve counseled them at the Kharghar police station. These children were students of 11th and 12th standard. The parents of these children were called to the police station. The Kharghar police said that the children would be handed over to their parents at night.

Pravin Bodkhe, Fire Officer, CIDCO, speaking to The Indian Express, said: As soon as we received the news of the children being trapped at 2:15 pm, our team reached out to them under the waterfall, approximately 650 meters below ground level, on the mountain behind the driving range in Kharghar, in just seven minutes. We went to the scene and brought the children safely down to the other side of the waterfall with the help of a rope and handed them over to Assistant Police Inspector Pradeep Awhad. The rescue operation was completed at 3:45 pm.

Mumbai Rains Today Live Updates: Why monsoon came to Mumbai two weeks early, and why this has been an unusual May for city

Mumbai woke up to an unusual Monday in what has been an unusual May — monsoon arrived two weeks in advance, and in full force. Life was thrown out of gear in the maximum city as several pockets reeled under water logging, traffic and slow train services.

This year’s monsoon onset has shattered all-time records. Data show that this is the earliest that the monsoon has ever arrived in Mumbai (IMD has been keeping records since 1950), with the previous earliest onset date logged at May 29 in the years 1971, 1962 and 1956. For perspective, the normal date of monsoon onset in Mumbai is June 11.

Why did the monsoon arrive early in Mumbai this year?

Typically, monsoon onset in Mumbai is nearly 10 days after the arrival of rains in Kerala. The normal date of onset in Kerala is June 1, following which the southwest monsoon typically advances to Maharashtra by June 6 and then onto the Mumbai coast by June 11.

This year, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced the onset of monsoon in Kerala on May 24, the earliest since 2009. Also, the southwest monsoon travelled from Kerala to Maharashtra within 24 hours, reaching Maharashtra on Sunday and Mumbai on Monday. Reported by Nayonika Bose

Similarly, the Santacruz station recorded a maximum of 28.7°C — the coolest May day there since 2021, when temperatures had dropped to 26.9°C. The persistent rainfall has significantly tempered the usual summer heat, bringing a rare May chill to the city.

The hole was developed on the road connecting Breach Candy and Kemp’s Corner, causing a ‘hollow cave-in’ in the middle of the northbound carriageway of the road.

Soon after, the accumulated rainwater was seen gushing into the caved-in portion. The vehicular movement was temporarily stopped and diverted. Civic officials said repair works have been initiated, and no citizens were injured. Read

Mumbai Rains Today LIVE Updates: Aaditya Thackeray slams BMC over flooding

As heavy pre-monsoon showers lashed Mumbai on Monday, large parts of the city reported severe waterlogging, prompting sharp criticism from Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray, who accused the BJP-led Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) of administrative failure.

“Waterlogging has returned to areas that had been made flood-free during our tenure. The absolute apathy of the BJP government that has controlled the BMC for the past three years has led to Mumbai coming to a standstill today,” Thackeray said in a statement.

One of the key locations he pointed to was Hindmata — long known as a flood-prone zone — which had undergone major infrastructure upgrades in 2021–22. “The Hindmata area, which we made waterlogging-free, is submerged again today only because the BMC did not initiate the water-pumping process on time,” he said.

Thackeray also cited last week’s incidents of waterlogging at Andheri Subway and Saki Naka, noting that the number of affected areas had since grown. “Today, it is many more areas that are suffering under the BJP’s terrible governance,” he added.

Questioning the civic body’s preparedness, he alleged: “Why does the BJP hate Mumbai so much that it has left the city grappling with roads half dug up, nullahs not cleaned, and more flooding than ever before?”

Despite the civic body’s claims of pre-monsoon readiness, several parts of the city remained waterlogged for hours on Monday, affecting traffic and daily life. Officials said dewatering pumps had been deployed and emergency teams were on the ground, but many residents took to social media to express frustration over delays and poor communication.
