FIR against news channel editor over ‘explicit video’ of BJP’s Kirit Somaiya

The Mumbai police on Tuesday registered an FIR against Kamlesh Sutar, editor-in-chief of news channel Lokshahi, and media person Anil Thatte for allegedly broadcasting an explicit video purportedly of BJP leader Kirit Somaiya.
A complaint was registered after Somaiya reached Mumbai police east region cyber police station on Wednesday and gave a written complaint. Earlier, the Mumbai Police crime branch was tasked with the job of conducting an inquiry into the video after the issue was raised in the monsoon session of the State Legislature.
A senior officer said, “We are registering an FIR based on the complaint given by Somaiya. As per his complaint, explicit content was shared on Lokshahi channel by its editor and by Anil Thatte who shared it via his YouTube channel.”
The officer said they HAD to invoke sections of the Information Technology (IT) Act and the IPC section pertaining to defamation. The officer said that once the FIR was registered, police would proceed with the investigation.
When asked about the inquiry that had been ordered to verify details of the purported clip, the officer said that it is ongoing, but refused to divulge details about the status of the probe. The issue was raised in the Vidhan Parishad by Leader of Opposition Ambadas Danve who provided a pen drive of the alleged videos to the Deputy Chairperson of the Upper House.
Danve and Sena (UBT) leader Anil Parab had sought an enquiry in the matter to check if any woman had been threatened to maintain relations with the person who is seen in the video.
