Sachin Yadav (23), one of the victims of the hoarding collapse, had landed a job as an attendant at the ill-fated BPCL petrol pump in Ghatkopar just a couple of months ago, a family member said.

Yadav is one of the 14 people who were killed when a 120 x 120 square feet illegal hoarding collapsed on a petrol pump in the Chheda Nagar area due to gusty winds during dust storms and rains that lashed the city on Monday.

At least 75 others were injured in the incident. Sachin, father to a three-month-old baby, had joined as an attendant at the petrol pump just a couple of months ago, said his cousin Sunil Yadav. "I was unaware of the accident till someone shared a video on my WhatsApp group. I realised that Sachin was working at the petrol pump and was worried. Ghatkopar hoarding collapse: What you didn't know

  • The hoarding that collapsed was 120X120 feet in size, whereas the size of hoardings permissible by BMC is 40X40 feet.
  • The billboard was illegal and no permission was taken to install it, according to civic officials.
  • The BMC’s tree department had in the past registered an official complaint with the police against the agency that maintained the collapsed hoarding after indigenous trees like Subabul, Peepal and Peltophorum that were planted in the periphery of the billboard had perished mysteriously.
  • Rescue teams were facing a challenge as they cannot use gasoline-powered cutter equipment and oxyfuel cutter which can result in a blast or fire as there is a petrol pump at the site.

Maharashtra Poll Ballotin: What’s in the bags?

A war of words erupted between leaders of the two Shiv Sena factions on Monday after Shiv Sena UBT Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut alleged that Chief Minister Eknath Shinde carried bags stashed with cash in a helicopter to Nashik. Shiv Sena MLA and spokesperson Sanjay Shirsat, however, rubbished the claim and asked whether he should reveal how many bags stashed with cash were delivered to Matoshree—the residence of Uddhav Thackeray.

Raut had posted a video on microblogging site X, showing CM Shinde alighting from a helicopter and some persons around him carrying large bags. Raising suspicion that bags contain cash, Raut said, “If they claim to have the support of people, then why do they need money to entice voters. The authorities have time to probe our helicopters, but no action is taken against these people.”
