Mumbai Wednesday recorded the lowest minimum temperature since 2020 as the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Santacruze observatory recorded 17.8 degrees Celsius, which was two degrees below normal level.
This is the second time this year that the megapolis recorded the lowest minimum (night) temperature since 2020.
Earlier on March 4, Mumbai’s minimum temperature stood at 17.9 degrees Celsius.
In 2020, the city’s night temperature had dropped to 16.6 degrees which was the lowest.
Officials from the weather bureau have maintained that the drop in temperature is the result of the northerlies that have been blowing over Mumbai since last week. Also, prior to this, Mumbai had been recording high maximum temperatures between 35 and 37 degrees.
“For the past three days northerly and westerly winds are blowing past Mumbai continuously which has led to a drastic dip in temperature. Also, there has been snowfall in northern India along with hailstorms in other parts of country. These factors contributed together in bringing down the overall temperature in Mumbai and this situation is likely to exist for next 2 days after that temperature may gradually rise,” Sunil Kamble, who heads IMD Mumbai said.
Kamble said that over the next few days the maximum temperature would range between 28 and 30 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature would hover around 18 and 19 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, Mumbai’s maximum (day) temperature Wednesday stood at 32.2 degrees Celsius, which was one degree below normal.
IMD’s coastal observatory at Colaba recorded a night temperature of 21 degrees Celsius Wednesday, which was also one degree below normal while a maximum temperature of 30.5 degrees was recorded in Colaba.
