A 23-year-old labourer died on Wednesday after falling from the ninth floor of a residential building in Ghatkopar, Mumbai, while installing a water pipe for air-conditioners, the police said.

The deceased identified as Bharat Sitaram Rai was working at the building under contractor Mukesh Chaurasia against whom the police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) on the charges of causing death due to negligence.

As per the complaint of Rai’s elder brother Vijaykumar, 25, the death occurred as the contractor did not provide Rai with any safety gear.

“Vijaykumar, who works in Pune, received a call on Wednesday night. The person told him that his brother who was working at Jhelum building in the Bhatwadi area of Ghatkopar fell off the ninth floor and was admitted to the Rajawadi hospital,” said an officer.

Vijaykumar informed his sister staying in Mumbai and rushed to the hospital. At the hospital he was informed that his brother had died, the officer said.

According to Vijaykumar, the contractor told him that his brother who was on a suspended scaffolding was asked to drill holes on the wall of the building to install a pipe for water coming off the AC.

“Chaurasia went to the ground floor to attach the other end of the drilling machine in the socket on the ground floor. He called out to Rai three times asking if the drill machine was working but there was no response. He said when he came out to look for Rai, he was not on the swing. Later he found him lying on the ground,” Vijaykumar said in the complaint filed at the Ghatkopar police station.
