The shooting set of a Hindi television serial was entirely gutted and the sets of two other serials got partially damaged after a fire broke out inside the Film City in Goregaon (East), Mumbai Friday.

According to the disaster control bulletin of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the fire started on the sets of ‘Ghum Hain Kisikey Pyar Mein’ at 4.30 pm. At first, the fire was categorised as level-1. Civic officials said the flames intensified and the fire was labelled as level-2 at 4.53 pm and later as level-3 at 5.22 pm.

Twelve firefighting engines, seven jumbo tankers, and two water tankers were pressed into operation.

Officials from the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) stated that the flames intensified due to the presence of combustible items like wood, tarpaulin sheets, curtains, and thermocol. The officials further said that the flames spread to an adjoining set owing to the wind.

Sanjay Manjrekar, chief fire officer of the MFB, said the fire brigade will carry out an investigation to ascertain the cause of the fire.

“We will question the people present during the time of the incident and will also follow up on the preventive measures to check if there was any lapse. Since the set was erected in open ground, a follow-up investigation would be necessary to identify the cause of the fire,” Manjrekar told The Indian Express.

“After the fire erupted, all the artists and workers present there were immediately evacuated. While no injury was reported, one set in which the fire originated first has been entirely gutted and two adjoining sets were partially damaged. Now it is the producer’s call whether they will resume shooting immediately or will take a break,” said Avinash Dhakane, managing director of the Film City.

A senior MFB official said, “During the afternoon, southward winds were blowing at high speed which caused the flames to spread to two other sets that were in close proximity to the spot of the incident. However, the fire was brought under control and has been doused. We will carry out an investigation to ascertain the cause of the fire.”
