The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) will start concreting work at the Mumbai Central Bus Stand from Monday to improve infrastructure and address long-standing operational challenges. The project, part of a state-wide initiative to modernise 183 bus depots, will be completed within the next two months.

The project is being carried out in collaboration with the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), which has allocated ₹600 crore for modernising bus stations across the state. At Mumbai Central, approximately 1,900 square metres of the bus stand will be concreted at an estimated cost of Rs 1.64 crore.

Currently, around 155 buses from depots outside Mumbai operate daily from Mumbai Central, carrying thousands of passengers. However, buses from the Mumbai Central depot will continue to operate from the existing premises.

These services will be temporarily rerouted to other bus stations to facilitate uninterrupted operations during the concretisation work. The phased re-routing is intended to minimize disruption for passengers while ensuring smooth operations during the construction period.

An MSRTC spokesperson said, “To minimize inconvenience, during the period of construction, these routes will temporarily operate from nearby stations such as Parel, Dadar, and Kurla and Nehru Nagar.”

The project aims to address issues such as potholes, waterlogging, and dust, which have been persistent problems for passengers and bus operations. By the end of the project, these improvements are expected to create a smoother and more efficient commuting experience for passengers.

Once the work is completed, all routes will be restored to the Mumbai Central Bus Stand. This upgrade is expected to significantly enhance public transportation infrastructure, benefitting both passengers and MSRTC’s operations in the long term.
