A 41-year-old builder from Mumbai was arrested by the Nagpada police on Friday for allegedly duping three persons of Rs 1.8 crore by promising them flats.

The police arrested Abdul Kareem Majeed Khan around 3.45 am from his house in Kurla. He was produced before a holiday court, which remanded him in police custody.

The police told the court that Khan has been booked in seven other cases of cheating, of which six are registered at Nagpada police station alone.

In regard to the case in which he was arrested, the police said that in May 2010, a 40-year-old woman’s husband and father-in-law had booked two flats at an under-construction building being developed by Majeed and his partner. They paid him Rs 43.54 lakh till October 2011 for the same.

However, on October 2, 2011, Majeed and his partner told the family that the project has been cancelled. “He also said that they can re-invest the money in another project, for which Majeed even offered them a discount. The husband and father-in-law went on to invest in the project and pay even more money for the flats,” said an officer.

“On August 30, 2017, the father-in-law passed away and the husband did not have money to pay further. The builder then offered one flat instead of the two initially booked. By then, the family had already paid Rs 68.54 lakh… After that the developer stopped answering their calls, the couple started visiting his office. They were told that a flat will be allotted to them,” the officer added.

The police said that on July 1, 2021, the couple were even handed an allotment letter of a 10th floor flat, but later they came to know that Majeed and his partner had duped several other investors.

The couple then started requesting the builders to return their money but their calls were ignored. Following this, a complaint was filed at Nagpada police station.

Sub-Inspector Pradeep Marathe said, “We have clubbed three complaints into one FIR. Majeed and his partner has duped the three victims of Rs 1.8 crore and we are trying to recover the amount.”
