Changing City: New bridge to Mumbai airport Terminal 1 getting ready, 70% work over
The bridge leading to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport promises smooth traffic flow, facilitating effortless travel from the airport towards the Bandra direction.

The construction of a bridge to enable seamless traffic flow to the Terminal 1 of Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) is making significant progress, with over 70 per cent of the work already completed. Once operational, the bridge allows motorists an easy commute towards Bandra direction.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority is overseeing the project along the bustling Western Express Highway (WEH) in Mumbai, ensuring minimal disruption to regular traffic while expediting construction to open the bridge for public use next year.
The bridge starts at Nandgiri guest house and ends at Sai Baba Mandir Bhajiwadi.

Contractor: M/s. RPS Infraprojects. Pvt. Ltd
Status: Overall more than 70% of work over.
Alignment: Two-lane one-way flyover for Bandra-bound traffic from International Airport T2.
Project cost: Rs 48.43 crore.
Total length of flyover: 615 metres, width is 8 metres (2 Lanes)
Challenges:
1. Constant movement of traffic at WEH
2. Maximizing the roadway’s efficiency by replacing the traditional method at the time of girder launch with an inverted T arrangement on steel portal beams. This method eliminated the need for temporary support in the centre, reducing the roadway’s obstruction during construction.
Benefits:
1. The construction of a new flyover adjacent to the existing one will prevent traffic conflicts between T2 Terminal heading towards Bandra and traffic from Andheri heading towards T1 Terminal/Vile Parle.
2. Decongestion of intersections beneath the WEH flyovers enables to enhance connectivity for quicker travel, saving both time and fuel.
Official speak:
According to an officer, the design of the bridge incorporates a shorter length and lower height, minimising its land usage and ensuring a more visually appealing result. “Currently, the link between Terminal 1 of Mumbai’s airport and the Western Express Highway faces frequent traffic congestion, causing disruptions in the area. Once finished, this flyover will significantly reduce congestion at the T1 junction, playing a crucial role in easing traffic bottlenecks in the vicinity. The bridge will enhance the traffic flow between the WEH and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai,” .
