Mumbai University (MU) has been re-accredited A grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The result was declared on Saturday and MU scored 3.05 grade points. Following the three-day visit by a 10-member peer committee from NAAC from March 13-16 and a thorough survey of every aspect of the university,MU was awarded A grade.
MU Vice-Chancellor Dr Rajan Welukar said,We are happy MU was awarded A grade. Its the effort of teachers,non-teaching staff,affiliated colleges and students. We will now concentrate on improving further.
MU officials presented the peer team with various programmes undertaken by the university that led to growth and development in the past five years. Getting an A grade will also benefit the students. Over 8,000 MU students go abroad for higher studies and this would be of great help to them, said a senior MU official.
Institutes must apply for re-accreditation every five years. A new methodology for accreditation came into effect from April 1,2007. But while MU was accredited in 2001 and got a five-star rating,the validity got over in 2006. Though it got a one-year extension,it took the university four years to apply for a fresh accreditation under the new methodology.
The varsity was widely criticised for using the rating even after its expiry and questions were raised in the Cabinet.
