The rift among motormen of Mumbai’s suburban trains spilled out into open yet again when a motorman was allegedly threatened by his colleagues on Monday for giving driving lessons to other staff. Posters calling some railway staff traitors were also seen on the railway premises. The motorman, who was allegedly threatened,is apparently one of the four chosen by the Western Railway (WR) administration under a ‘contingency programme’ launched on June 7 in a bid to counter flash strikes by motormen.

Following a strike by motormen on May 3 and 4,the railways had decided to train other staff such as loco pilots and those working in car sheds to operate trains. The motormen, who were selected to give training include Jahur Khan,Ajay Bhartwal,S D Niwant and Anil Kumar Diwedi. The four have trained as many as 150 railway staff so far.

According to sources, some motormen surrounded Jahur Khan on Monday and threatened him with dire consequences. “There were posters in cab and other places with slogans Ye Gaddar hai,” said Khan. He has, however, lodged a complaint with the GRP at Churchgate. A member of Joint Action Forum of Western and Central Railway said,“Motormen did nothing. When we were sitting at lobby,Jahur came there and asked (us) who did it. He abused us.”

A year ago, motormen had refused to give training to trainee motormen. Following this, the railways had selected six motormen to provide training to the new recruits. They were also threatened, but the administration took a strong stand to protect them,” said a motorman on condition of anonymity.

“The railways has general and subsidiary rules. General rules are framed by Indian Railway and subsidiary by zonal railway administration. As per subsidiary rules,it is the duty of a motorman to give practical training to the new ones,” he said. Now,70 motormen are being trained and 45 will complete it by August end. The new motormen would drive trains from September 1.
